More About The Episcopal Men's Group
How We Started
The groups origins lie with St. Benedict's and St. Anne's
parishes. The energy that was present with this group of men has
inspired us to continue to reach out to other paricshes in the local
area and in the wider diocese. Because of the broader participation,
we wanted to call ourselves The Episcopal Men's Group instead of using
any one parish's name. As such, we are striving to make this a
diocesan ministry for men--- something that is sorely needed.
What Makes Us Different?
Yes,
there are other men's groups in the area, but their common emphasis on
solicitation and proselytizing have a negative connotation to them.
Instead, we seek to develop an opportunity for study and reflection
that respect the integrity of each individual's faith journey and our
common Anglican heritage of an intelligent and deeply spiritual
practice of faith.
While other men's groups have a sermon
delivered by one individual, our practice has been to engage each and
every attendee through table-based, small-group reflection. The effect
has been that every person has the opportunity to wonder about the
Gospel reading and its application to bothe his own life and the life
of the larger church. Additionally, because the study is based on the
lessons from the Revised Common Lectionary, they carry their questions
and insights with them into worship on Sunday mornings.
Why the Inter-parochial Approach?
To
date, inter-parochial cooperation has not been widely experienced
within our diocese. As well as providing an opportunity for
individuals to grow in faith, we want the Episcopal Men's Group to
facilitate the development of stronger relationships among the men of
the Diocese of Atlanta. By the strengthening of relationships and
discovering synergies, we hope to further increase the work of Christ
in our area.
